The last few days have been some of the hardest days I've had as a mom. Ruben and June both have this nasty, phlegmy cough that is making us all miserable. June started it out this weekend with a fever and a few trips to our room in the middle of the night. Overall, it wasn't that bad - I skipped playing piano for Go Fish but we still made it for church and Sunday School. However, Ruben picked it up shortly after and hasn't slept well independently since Monday nap. Monday night I actually slept on the couch with him to keep him elevated. Every time I tried to lay him down in his crib he screamed so we gave it up. Last night he slept in his crib for a whopping hour and a half before he convinced me he should spend the night in our bed. For nap today he finally slept for 2 straight hours (I think those are the first two hours in a row he's slept since Sunday) in his crib. I could barely contain my excitement.
Now that I see the light at the end of the tunnel and know that my life isn't going to be spent holding my baby while he sleeps, I am starting to treasure this time a little more. As my friends reminded me this morning at Mom's group, Ruben's almost at the stage of "No Snuggle." He'll be walking/running soon and won't want to slow down to sit on mom's lap or sleep in mom's arms. Maybe it's the sleep-deprived delirium talking but in hindsight, this has been a great week to snuggle with my babies. I may even forget how close to torture it is to wake up every hour to reposition your whiny, coughing kid.
