Watching love grow

Ruben is just about to turn 9 months old.  For those 9 months, I've watched June go from the smothering, loving older sister who treated him like a baby doll to an older sister who is ready to play - and play rough.  Ruben has always thought June is funny and loves to look at her, but lately I've started to see the love between these siblings grow. Ruben will follow June anywhere - even under the table where his plump little body gets stuck in many a tight spot.  And June gets concerned whenever Ruben isn't in the same room.  After nap today the first thing she asked was, "Ruben sleep?" She had to check up on that brother and make sure he was okay.  I particularly like when she's trying to soothe Ruben's cry by saying, "hey, Buddy" or "Okay Ru Ru"

At night we have a pretty firm routine of bath (this is the most disposable of the routine), story, prayers, hugs and kisses, and to bed.  Ruben is involved in these steps as much as can be but often crawls around until prayer time because otherwise books would be soggy, torn up messes. Hugs and kisses are always my favorite moment because you just never know what you'll get.  Sometimes June will refuse to hug and kiss to try to stall bedtime, but she'll never turn down a chance to hug and kiss Ruben.  And Ruben LOVES to kiss.  He opens his mouth, grabs June's hair and pulls her in for a huge, wet, suction kiss.  June always comes out giggling as we extract her hair from his fists.  I know there will be a day when they won't even want to be in the same room together, but for now, the love flourishes and expresses itself every moment of the day.  This is what God meant when he says to love one another.
